As a singer talent can only take you so far, you have to look as singing as a trade and skill and always look to improve. You should become a student of singers whom you look up to. When I’m asked by someone how to be a singer another piece of advice that I give out is to take vocal lessons. Even if you are a talented singer a vocal coach can help you improve your voice and hone it to increase your chances of reaching your goal. Vocal training is really key in increasing the strength and quality of your voice. It can also prolong your career because you will be taught to sing properly in a way that won’t damage your voice.
Another key part of being a singer is having the ability to be comfortable in front of a crowd. If you don’t have the experience of being a singer and you want to know how to be a singer, than you should start trying to gain some experience in front of a crowd. Start small and perform in front of your family or trusted friends, but keep raising that comfort level and start performing in front of strangers.
As a singer develops you own unique style. Now you can have your influences but your style should also have something unique that people can recognize that it is you. Make sure you be yourself at all times; people can tell if you are trying to do or be something you are not. People always relate better with those they feel are authentic. This will not only help you as a singer but in real life.

If you plan on making a career in being a singer than you need to be able to get people to pay you for your singing. You can do this a variety of ways; you can joining a band, or record yourself and sell the CD’s. If you can’t get paid yet, than do a few gigs for free just for the experience. Another key component in becoming a successful singer is to practice practice pracitice. Practice in the shower, in your car, or anywhere you can. Be able to take constructive criticism.
