What to do at a Commercial Audition
The set of a commercial audition is quite a hectic place to be with many people in attendance. Those people include the casting director, the producer, the camera man, a many other types people. One word of advice is to always stay professional and treat everyone you come in contact with respect, because even the guy who looks like the janitor can very well be the lead casting director.
Here is a list of Commercial Auditions in Your Area
You also want remember that at a commercial audition the casting director and his/her staff have been watching a plethora of people audition for the same part you are auditioning for, so they maybe really tired and not in a good mood. One of your goals is to make sure you make the casting directors job easy, which in turn will raise your chances of a successful audition. Having a bad attitude and giving the casting director a hard time is a great way to kill your chances of getting the part.
You should be dressed professional at a commercial audition, because one of the things a director is searching for is are you going to be a good ambassador for the brand that they are going to be promoting.
Once you are called up when it’s your turn, smile and introduce yourself. After you introduce yourself you want to give the staff your resume, cover letter, and head shots. You should have prepare all these before hand, and another tip is to carry multiple copies as you will never know who you will run into on set that could be interested in you.
Next you will be asked to stand on a specific location where you will be asked to “slate”, which basically means to tell them your name and the agency that you represent. At this point the director will ask you to perform different task such as walking or something related to the part you are auditioning for. Always be prepared for the unexpected at a commercial audition, a great way to do this is to take an improve class which will teach you how to improvise.
You will also be asked to speak lines which will be read with cue cards. Your cue cards will have the script written on them, don’t be ashamed to read straight from the cue cards because the director is judging how well you can convey the personality they want conveyed in the script, not how fast you can memorize lines. If you are handed the script a few minutes before your commercial audition, feel free to ask the casting director if you can take a few minutes to go over the script. Don’t waste their time, but go over it real quick so you at least have an idea of the part.
The casting director can ask you to read the script multiple times so he can see your range and skill of acting. If this happens than be happy that the director is taking the time to work with you, because that means that he/she has some interest or he wouldn’t bother spending extra time with you.
Now its time leave the casting audition, make sure you say professional, and say bye and thank you, than make your exit.
